During pregnancy the body undergoes enormous change, particularly with changes in posture, proprioception, pelvic stability and in turn the stability of the spine.
There are many benefits of exercise during pregnancy, and proven benefits of including Pilates in your weekly program. Pilates can help to:
· Bring awareness to your body, to help understand the dramatic changes that you experience during pregnancy
· Improve core stability
· Prevent joint problems which can be caused by ligamentous laxity
· Improve relaxation skills which will in turn help you to sleep, to cope with pregnancy and labour, and to improve mental health
· Breathing techniques can help through labour and delivery
· Pelvic floor education
· Prepares the body for becoming a mother and the many demands that has on the body
· An opportunity to meet with other mums-to-be in this area
The postnatal period is generally referred to as the 6 weeks following birth, but in reality it can take at least 9 months for the body to recover from pregnancy, and longer if you are breastfeeding. Once your midwife or GP has given you the go ahead to start exercising again, postnatal Pilates can help in the following ways:
· To strengthen the pelvic floor
· To correct the separation of the abdominals (diastasis recti)
· To improve posture by strengthening the deep abdominals
· To build strength and stability in the upper body to meet the demands of carrying an infant
· Self care (very important) – which can feel almost impossible when you have a baby, but will help you relax and free you of tension.
You will also enjoy meeting with other new mums who are on this journey with you.
During the postnatal classes, babies who are not yet crawling are welcome to join.
